Xin Qiji

Wikipedia

Xin Qiji (辛棄疾, Xīn Q?j?) (1140 - 1207) was a China|Chinese poet during the Southern Song dynasty.

Xin Qiji is known to be patriotic. At the time of his life, northern China was occupied by the Jurchens, a people from what is now north-east China then regarded as barbarians but later to beome the Manchus. Only southern China was ruled by the Chinese Southern Song dynasty. Xin Qiji was born in the north, and in his childhood his grandfather told him about the days when the Chinese also ruled the north. It was then when he developed his patriotic feelings.

Xin Qiji later became a successful military leader. He scored many victories. However, his glamour did not last. The cowardy Southern Song court had no intention to fight and recover their loss of territory. Thus, Xin Qiji could only retreat to the countryside. It was then when he composed many of his famous poems.

In 1207 the Southern Song court finally decided to fight the Jurchens. However, it was also the time he breathed his last breath.
