William Poy

William George Poy Military Medal|MM (born 1907 in Chiltern, New South Wales, Australia ??? died February 3, 2002 in Toronto, Canada).

Poy was the father of former Governor General of Canada|Governor General Adrienne Clarkson and retired plastic surgeon Dr Neville Poy. He was a self educated business man and served at the Canadian Trade Commission in Hong Kong during the 1930s. He later served as lance-corporal in the British Army's The Royal Hong Kong Regiment (The Volunteers)|The Hong Kong Volunteers. As a motorcycle dispatcher in Hong Kong during World War II, Poy won a medal for bravery. He fled with his wife Ethel Poy and their children to Canada in 1942. Settling in Ottawa, Poy continued to work at the trade commission and became a stock broker in the 1950s and retired in the mid 1970s. Widowed in 1988, he died in 2002 in a Toronto area nursing home. Poy had a brother, Lindsay, still living in Australia.
