White Horse Pagoda

Wikipedia

The White Horse Pagoda (Chinese language|Chinese ?????????, pinyin bai ma ta) was possibly the first Chinese pagodas|pagoda built in China proper, and certainly the first Chinese pagodas|Chinese pagoda in the sense that it was built by official decree. Built in 67, it was constructed of wood as part of the White Horse Temple in Luoyang.

Though the temple exists today, unsurprisingly the original pagoda has not survived. We know that it was placed in the center of the temple compound, however, as two Japanese temples built to mimic White Horse Temple have survived with this layout.
