Shanghai Metro, Line 3 - Pearlline

Shanghai Metro/Line|3 was opened in 2000 and runs from Baoshan District in the north to Shanghai Railway Station in the southwest of the city, where it meets Shanghai Metro/Line|1. While Shanghai Metro/Line|1 goes straight through the city center, this line follows the inner ring road going around it. A large part of this metro follows an old railway ring. All of this line is above ground, which is a difference from the first lines of the Metro.

The interval between trains of this line is relatively high compared to the other two lines, with an interval of around 12 minutes. This was probably done to make it easier to include Shanghai Metro/Line|4 into the schedule later on.

This line will share the part between Baoshan Lu and Hongqiao Lu with the newly built Shanghai Metro/Line|4 when the new line is opened. Within this area are also the stations Shanghai Railway Station and Zhongshan Park that offer transfer options to Shanghai Metro/Line|1 and Shanghai Metro/Line|2 respectively, with the Shanghai Railway transfer being quite a bit longer than the Zhongshan transfer. There is also a transfer to Shanghai's southern railway station, but that transfer is currently closed due to construction, despite Shanghai Metro/Line|1 still running there.

The Shanghai Metro/Line|3 itself is currently also undergoing construction to create a new northern extension. This extension will be around eight new stations. Most of this track has already been completed, but one station still has to be built and around one kilometer of the track still needs to be completed. As well, the stations for this extension have been completed but are not in use yet.
