Lingnan University (????????????) in Guangzhou, China, was a private university established by a missionary group of United States|Americans in 1888. It is orignally named Canton Christian College (????????????). In 1903, the Chinese name was changed to ???????????? in Macau. In 1916, the Chinese name was change to ???????????? and marked the beginning of university section. The management was turned over to the Chinese in 1927 and the English name was changed to Lingnan University in align with Chinese name. Dr. Chung Wing Kwong became the first Chinese principal of the University. In 1930s, it had developed to become a globally recognized institution. A branch in Hainan was set up to foster talents in agriculture in 1933.

Its site had changed several times. It moved to Macau in 1900 (due to Qing suppressing on revolutionary), and then back to Guangzhou in 1904. And then it went south to Hong Kong, in the University of Hong Kong, in 1937 (due to Japanese occupation of Canton), went to Shaoguan (due to the Japanese Occupation of Hong Kong) in northern Guangdong in 1942. After World War II, the university was finally back to Guangzhou.

In 1953, the university was incorporated into Sun Yat-sen University

Members of the university who fled from communist rule to Hong Kong founded Lingnan College in Hong Kong to continue the spirit of the university in 1967. The college became Lingnan University (Hong Kong)|Lingnan University in 1999.
