Iron Monkey (Chinese language|Chinese: ???????????????????????????) is the American name to the 1993 Hong Kong Kung fu movie called Siunin Wong Fei-hung tsi titmalau (a literal translation of the title is Wong Fei Hung: The Formative Years), directed by Woo-Ping Yuen. The film was given a wide release in America in 2001 by Miramax Films with the backing of director Quentin Tarantino. It received good reviews in America, where it made $14 million.

The film tells a fictionalized account of an episode in the childhood of the Chinese warrior Wong Fei Hung, and his father, Wong Kei Ying (played by Donnie Yen).

The film's story is similar to a Robin Hood or Zorro storyline set in a Hong Kong action movie style. The corrupt officials of a Chinese village are constantly robbed by a masked bandit known as "Iron Monkey", who has repeatedly foiled attempts of capture, and the Govenor forces a traveling physician named Wong Kei-Ying into finding the bandit. However, the arrival of an evil Shaolin monk in the village brings the Physician and Iron Monkey together to battle the corrupt government and end their evil ways.

The 2001 release by Miramax made several changes to the original film in order to make it more marketable for American audiences. Since most Americans are unfamiliar with the story of Wong Fei Hung, his name was removed from the title. The film had its subtitles tailored to remove the political context of the story, had scenes trimmed and changed for violence and pacing, and had the soundtrack changed, removing the famous Wong Fei Hung theme.

  • The part of Wong Fei Hung is played by Sze-Man Tsang, a young female martial artist.

  • Donnie Yen, who plays Wong Fei Hung's father, fought in one of the most celebrated on screen martial arts sequences: In the film Once Upon a Time in China II, his character faces off against Wong Fei Hung, there played by Jet Li.

This film was nominated the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Action Choreography (Directors Woo-ping Yuen, Cheung-Yan Yuen, Shun-Yee Yuen & Hin-Chiu Kook).
