I Ching hexagram 42, depicted |:::|| is named 益 (yi4), Augmenting. Other translations: R. Wilhelm/C. Baynes, Increase; E. Shaughnessy (Mawangdui), Increase.

  • Inner (lower) trigram is ☳ (|:: 震 zhen4) Shake = (雷) thunder

  • Outer (upper) trigram is ☴ (:|| 巽 xun4) Ground = (風) wind

  • The trigrams can be read bottom to top as "With enlightenment (thunder in lower) comes becoming influencial (wind in upper)"

The following material is drawn from analysis of the binary sequence of the hexagrams where the hexagrams are derived from recursion of yin/yang and so showing a property of the method - the hexagrams are all linked together and contribute to the expression of, the description of, each hexagram.

  • The skeletal form of hexagram 42 is described by analogy to the under-exaggerated properties of hexagram 08 where we have a generic focus on passive attraction that is of benefit and so introduces a vague sense of 'augmentation' refined in 42.
