Huazhong University of Science & Technology (new HUST), was established on May 26, 2000. The new HUST, a merger of the former HUST, Tongji Medical University, Wuhan Urban Construction Institute and Wuhan Science & Technology Vocational College, is a key university directly under the leadership of the Ministry of State Education. The administrative structure involves the integration of management from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Construction and Ministry of Science and Technology as well as management from the Hubei Provincial Government. Not only has this reorganization strengthened the management for more efficient administration of the university, it has also provided a historical opportunity for us to build into a first-class university respected worldwide.

The new organization brings an extensive and more reasonable structure of academic disciplines. In the University, there are nine disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, medicine and management. The University offers a variety of programs, including 59 undergraduate programs, 149 Master's programs, 92 doctoral programs and 17 post-doctoral research centers. A number of other leading research centers are located here, namely, 3 National Engineering Research Centers, 5 National Leading Laboratories, 3 National Specialized Laboratories. All these have laid a sound foundation for the change from a multi-disciplinary university into a comprehensive one. The new HUST has more than 10,000 faculty members, of whom over 4,000 are full-time teachers, 13 are academicians of CAS & CAE, 777 are full professors and more than 1,100 are associate professors. The resident students number over 50,000, of whom more than 10,000 are graduate students.

With the tremendous expertise and resources in the engineering and medicine disciplines, the new HUST can be best characterized as "strengthening technology innovation, developing hi-tech and achieving industrialization" towards 21st century. Based on the strong foundation of engineering, medicine and management disciplines, the University is positioned for rapid development by initially emphasizing life science and information technology innovation, while strengthening the liberal arts and science disciplines.

A solid foundation for future progress has been laid through the strength and success of each component institution. At the same time, a great contribution has been made to China's socialist construction course. During the past four decades, more than 100,000 qualified scientists and technicians have been trained. In the past decade, more than 3,000 scientific research projects were accomplished. Among them, more than 90 projects received science and technology awards at the state level, and over 700 at the provincial or ministerial level.

The former Huazhong University of Science and Technology was a large-scale university that developed rapidly. The university had an array of key disciplines, which rank among the top ones in China, including laser technology, numerical control, moulds technology, intellectual manufacturing, optimum design and CAD. Thus the university became one of the key bases for education and research in China. The number of papers published in academic journals ranked first among all the universities in China from 1993 to 1995 and ranked second from 1996-1998. In 1999, the university was the first among the list of Technology Progress Awards given by State Education Ministry. In 1997, the former HUST was 8th in the Appraisal of Research and Development Achievement of China's Universities; in 1998, it ranked 7th on the list of China's Universities Appraisal and 5th in the year of 2000. People in education circles call it the epitome of higher education of the New China.

The former Tongji Medical University is one of the best medical institutes in China. Its environmental health and general surgery & organ transplantation disciplines are the national key subjects, and most research studies of the general surgery and organ transplantation experiment clinical research center have achieved international recognition. Among them, the spleen transplantation is the most advanced in the world. The first fallopian tube abdominal cavity birth, was performed at the Tongji Hospital, which is affiliated with the Tongji Medical College of HUST.

The former Wuhan Urban Construction Institute has built up mature disciplines that are meeting the needs of urban construction and modern technology in the 21st century. It is particularly renowned for the areas of urban planning and road & bridge.

During timeless practice of university administration, the New HUST has gained plenty of experience and developed an instructive ideology in education. The beautiful environment and competitive atmosphere on campus are most favorable for study and research and bring spiritual fortune for development of the university. Strength and reform are the most important issues for the future. The new HUST will be based on the ideology "development and innovation, the only way", while upholding the flag of "unity, realism, focus, and initiative". The university will make great efforts to fulfill the strategic goal towards 21st century, namely, the New HUST will be developed into an internationally recognized university by 2020; and by 2050, when China is realizing her great revival, it will become one of the first-class university around the world.
