Wikipedia

Hengqin (橫琴島, Cantonese language|Cantonese IPA|<!--: <font size=2 face="Arial Unicode MS, Lucida Sans Unicode"> -->wɑŋ11 k??ʌm11 təʊ35, Mandarin language|Mandarin Hanyu Pinyin|Pinyin: Hengqin Dao) is an island in Zhuhai prefecture-level city|city, Guangdong, People's Republic of China|China, adjacent to Taipa|Ilha da Taipa and Coloane|Ilha de Coloane of Macao, and is connected to Cotai with a bridge. It has a population of about 3,000.

It was formerly two islands, namely Da Hengqin (Portuguese: D. Jo??o) and Xiao Hengqin (Montanha), which are very recently connected by land reclamation. There is a proposal to develop the island into a resort area. The reclaimed island is 96km2 (37 square miles) (http://www.econres.com/documents/specialty_Asia.htm). It is the place beautiful garden type seashore city.

D. Jo??o and Montanha were claimed by Portugal, along with the larger former island of Wanzai (Lapa) ??? now a peninsula ??? to their north, as part of Prov??ncia da Macau, because "Portuguese schools are established there" (http://www.cefc.com.hk/uk/pc/articles/art_ligne.php?num_art_ligne=4402#a20). They were briefly occupied by Macao before the World War 2 (http://www.worldstatesmen.org/China_Foreign_colonies.html#Macau).

Since the land reclamation and development, there has been a growing opinion in Macao that the island should be leased to Macao, where land is very limited and there is little room for further development. By September 1, 2005, plans are revealed that the government of Guangdong Province will allow tax exemptions and adopt flexible immigration control in Hengqin to promote investments from Hong Kong and Macao.

It is the biggest island in the 146 islands of Zhuhai. Its size is roughly 3 times of Macau. Its bay is multitudinous, the sand beach is continuous, grotesquely-shaped jagged rocks, beautiful scenery, the air is fresh, the primitive vegetation preservation is completed. The impression of this island is quiet, one kind of seashore unique spacious quietness.
