On March 19 1279, China|Chinese general Zhang Hongfan of the Yuan Dynasty annihilated the last fleet of the Southern Song Dynasty (960-1279)|Song Dynasty at Yamen, (today Xinhui County, Guangdong Province).

As a consequence, a high official Lu Xiufu is said to have taken the boy emperor Emperor Bing of Song China (Song Di Bing) in his arms and jumped from a clifftop into the sea, drowning both of them. Zhang Shijie, commander of the Song fleet, escaped from the scene but was later drowned when his ship was brought down in a storm.

This ended the Song Dynasty (960-1279)|Song Dynasty.
