This article is about the alternative medicine proponent. There are famous (unrelated) mathematicians named Andrew Wiles and Andr?? Weil Dr. Andrew Weil, born 1942, is a world famous physician. He is one of the leading proponents of Terms and concepts in alternative medicine#Integrative medicine|integrative medicine. He founded Weil Lifestyles LLC. He received both his undergraduate degree in biology (with a focus on botany) and his medical degree from Harvard University. Weil's first book was The Natural Mind, published in 1971. It was concerned with psychotropic drugs & posited a human drive towards altered states of consciousness. In it, he writes about the advantages of "stoned thinking" in understanding health and diagnosing illnesses. The book also is about other means of altering ones consciousness such as daily meditation techniques. He is currently employed as a professor of internal medicine at the University of Arizona in Tucson where he is the director and founder of the Program in Integrative Medicine. Weil's general view is that patients do best utilizing both mainstream and alternative medicine. In general, he believes in the usage of mainstream medicine is well suited to crisis intervention and alternative medicine for prevention and health maintenance. Nutrition is emphasized in almost all of Weil's health works. Weil is open about his past and present use of illegal substances, claiming "I think I've tried about every drug in his book From Chocolate to Morphine." He is equally open with his views on ending the War On Drugs citing the benefits of many banned plants. In fact, the opening paragraph of From Chocolate to Morphine reads as follows: "Drugs are here to stay. History teaches that it is vain to hope that drugs will ever disappear and that any effort to eliminate them from society is doomed to failure." Dr. Weil claims that there's an innate need for humans to alter consciousness, & that there is no such thing as good or bad drugs, merely that some individuals have good or bad relationships with certain substances. Despite this, Weil's personal history with the Drug subculture|Drug Culture is less well-known. Weil studied under Dr. Timothy Leary at Harvard, & also worked with Dr. Lester Grinspoon on marijuana research in the late-1960's. As an internationally recognized expert on medicinal herbs, mind-body interactions, & alternative medicine, Dr. Weil graced the cover of Time magazine in 1998, & again in 2005. Weil has even been honored with having a psychedelic mushroom named in his honor: Psilocybe weilii was discovered and named in 1995. He is the best-selling author of books such as Natural Mind, From Chocolate to Morphine, The Marriage of the Sun and Moon, Health and Healing, Spontaneous Healing, 8 Weeks to Optimum Health, Eating Well for Optimum Health, and The Healthy Kitchen. Dr. Weil's latest work Healthy Aging was published in October of 2005.
